As Associate Director, Bioinformatics Data Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and optimizing scalable data . pipelines. for processing large-scale genomics and biomedical data as well as building front-end user-friendly data products. In addition to hands-on technical work, this role includes leadership responsibilities, managing and mentoring a small team of data engineers/front-end developers. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including bioinformaticians, wet-lab scientists, data scientists, and software engineers, to support advanced analytics and bioinformatics research. This role is within our Global Data & Governance, Digital, Data & AI department and will report to our Senior Director, Data Products - Research & Enabling Functions.. Responsibilities. Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines for processing genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and other biological data.. Optimize data storage and retrieval systems for large-scale biological datasets using cloud hyperscalers (AWS, GCP, or Azure).. Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing tools and techniques on AWS cloud platforms, including Databricks, along with a solid understanding of data engineering practices. Familiarity with Terraform, . PySpark. , Gitlab and Jenkins are also preferred.. Collaborate with bioinformatics scientists to develop data processing workflows and support computational analysis.. Implement and maintain E2E Data Management frameworks ensuring data quality, data validation, error handling, and monitoring.. Develop and enforce data security best practices, including data access control and compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).. Design and maintain data models, databases, and metadata systems to support efficient data management.. Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code using Python, R, SQL, or other relevant languages.. Collaborate with software engineers to integrate bioinformatics data pipelines into larger software solutions.. Stay current with emerging bioinformatics tools, data engineering practices, and industry standards.. Team Management Responsibilities:. Lead, mentor, and manage a team of bioinformatics data engineers, front-end developers by providing technical guidance, code reviews, performance feedback, and career development support.. Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Computational Data Science (OR) Bachelors'/Masters' degree in relevant technical and scientific field with 12+ years of technical experience.. 8+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership or team management role.. Experience with programming languages (e.g. Perl, Java,, Python). Strong experience with cloud hyperscalers (AWS/Azure/GCP) and Databricks.. Solid programming experience in R, especially for Shiny application development.. Exposure to modular code design, R package development, or workflow testing.. Strong communication skills, including experience communicating genomics data to wet-lab scientists.. Experience with data pipeline frameworks (Apache Airflow, Prefect, Luigi) and . ETL. processes.. Strong understanding of data modeling, database design (SQL and NoSQL), and metadata management.. Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).. Familiarity with genomic data formats (FASTQ, BAM, VCF, h5ad) and bioinformatics tools (BWA, GATK, STAR, CellRanger) as well a general understanding of common assays used in life sciences (omics, FACS, etc.). Proven leadership and team management skills, with experience mentoring and developing junior engineers and front-end developers..
