About the Data Engineering Vertical . The Data Engineering vertical is focused on the infrastructure, pipelines, and systems that power modern data-driven products and AI/ML applications at scale. We deliver practical, implementation-focused learning resources to help engineers design, build, and optimize robust data platforms. Key segments currently include:  . Databases: design, optimization, scalability, AI-ready vector search integration  . Data Architecture: end-to-end design patterns, cloud-native and hybrid systems, data mesh, lakehouse  . Data Engineering: orchestration, workflow automation, ETL/ELT frameworks, AI-augmented pipelines  . Role Overview . As Content Engineer for the Data Engineering vertical, your primary objective is to deliver high-quality, market-relevant learning products that address the evolving needs of data engineers. You will work closely with authors, experts, and technical reviewers to ensure our books, courses, and related resources set the industry standard in clarity, accuracy, and applied value. . Reporting directly to the Portfolio Director, you will own editorial quality from concept to publication, while also contributing to the vertical’s strategic growth through competitive immersion, user research, and experimentation with new product formats. . . Adaptability and Evolving Role Requirements in Packt's Vertical Structure . Packt’s move to verticals, bringing our teams closer to users, is a response to significant changes in the market. Due to AI, self-publishing, and multi-format options, the nature of the work and the business of publishing are changing. This is not just for Packt, but for the whole industry.   . Whereas in the past we had atomized and specialist roles in a single-format product lifecycle (e.g. development editor and acquisition editor for books), in the future we will need to be agile and flexible, prepared to adapt and stretch our skills and knowledge to new products and services. Each vertical team will evolve over time towards the offering and product suite that best serves its users. Vertical teams, and the work they do, will adapt accordingly.   . Examples of the agility we are looking for: in roles related to publishing, you will not only be working on books but also on other content formats that fit the preferences of your users (newsletter, live events, etc.). You may have a different team structure and line manager in your vertical vs other verticals. You will be open to taking on stretch projects and undertaking tests to evolve new product types. You’ll get proactively involved in team meetings so that you can contribute your ideas alongside the rest of the vertical team. Whatever role you are in you will be expected to connect with users and experts in your vertical, and to sustain ongoing relationships that provide value. This in turn means developing a level of domain knowledge in the technology and user roles in your vertical.   . Evaluate and refine proposals and outlines with a focus on user needs, market demand, and technical accuracy. . Conduct substantive edits to improve clarity, structure, and technical flow. . Collaborate with technical reviewers to guarantee correctness of code, architectures, and workflows. . Provide content health checks for planning and time allocation. . Expected outcome: Publication of content that resonates with practicing data engineers and achieves strong market performance. . Expert & Author Collaboration . Provide structured, constructive feedback to help authors create practical, implementation-driven content. . Coach content creators on techniques for teaching difficult or complex concepts. . Build positive but challenging relationships to maximize author potential and satisfaction. . Market & User Research . Track trends across tools and platforms (AWS, Azure, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, dbt, emerging data engineering tech). . Benchmark against competing titles and incorporate market intelligence into editorial strategy. . Seek customer feedback throughout the editorial process and apply it to product shaping. . Expected outcome: A portfolio that reflects real-world practitioner needs and positions Packt as a thought leader. . Quality & Process Ownership . Own quality sign-off for all Data Engineering titles and products. . Balance speed-to-market with editorial depth, ensuring timely yet high-quality releases. . Ensure compliance with Packt’s publishing standards, addressing plagiarism and structural weaknesses where necessary. . . Contribute to editorial workflow improvements by sharing feedback and best practices. . . Expected outcome: Consistently high user satisfaction, improved ROI per title, and reliable editorial practices that adapt smoothly to changing content and workflow needs.  . . Strategic & Multi-Format Responsibilities . Contribute beyond books by supporting multi-format publishing (courses, newsletters, live sessions, and derivative products) in line with user preferences. . Track competing titles, market changes, and customer feedback to ensure Packt’s Data Engineering portfolio remains differentiated and relevant. . Take on stretch projects and test new product types to evolve the vertical’s publishing model. . Enable author growth by helping them sharpen teaching approaches and adapt complex topics for diverse learners. . Identify inefficiencies in editorial workflows and implement improvements that raise efficiency and consistency. . Decide when a product should be signed off for production, revised, or cancelled; ensure plagiarism is addressed; and balance speed-to-market with editorial depth. . . Reports directly to the Portfolio Director – Data Engineering. . . Collaborates with Growth Lead, marketing, and product management to align editorial and go-to-market priorities. . . Works closely with Relationship Leads (RLs) to develop, coach, and grow author talent, ensuring strong pipelines of repeat collaborators.. . . Who You Are .
